Arsenal legend, Ian Wright, has questioned the decision not to start Chelsea forward Lauren James in England’s 2023 FIFA World Cup opener against Haiti on Saturday.

The Lionesses defeated Haiti 1-0 to claim all three points in their Group D first game.

Georgia Stanway’s first-half penalty sealed the victory for England against a resilient Haitian side.

But James was named among the substitutes in Brisbane during the encounter.

The 21-year-old came off the bench after 61 minutes to replace Lauren Hemp as England chased a second goal.

With England’s attack looking somewhat laboured at times, Wright believes James should have been in from the start of the match.

“Absolutely no way Lauren James should be starting on the bench,” Wright wrote on Twitter during the contest.

England’s next game is against Denmark on Friday.
