Police nab suspects who killed 3, burnt Cross River village

Two of the perpetrators of the mayhem unleashed on the Nta community in Ikom LGA of Cross River State last weekend where three persons were confirmed killed and more than 10 houses burnt have been arrested.

The divisional police officer in Ikom, Teryima Anthony confirmed that they were able to pick up the two whose names were not readily available, adding that more suspects would be arrested.

He said they have moved them to the state police headquarters on Diamond Hill Calabar where they are presently being detained and interrogated.

Survivors and other Nta community elders, including Chief Assi Njan Batta, His Highness Livinus Mfono Nton as well as the youths president, Agbor Nkoro Mgbang also appeared before the police in Calabar where they narrated their ordeals in the hands of their attackers, the Mbembe people of Obubra LGA.

Police sources said it was important they picked up elders from Mbembe, not just the youths who spearheaded the mayhem.

Recall that a communal clash which persisted between the peoples of Ofunokpan, Mbembe tribe in Obubra LGA and Nta community in Ikom LGA, both in the central part of the state started in 1993; it resurrected again with the killing of three persons.

The three persons were killed in Nnaorokpa community in Nta, Ikom.

Sources said the attackers had arrived at 5am last Thursday without prior notice and pounced on the Nta Nnaorokpa people.

Two of those killed were Rejoice Nton Anoka, 10, and a student, Mariam Akanya Mfono, 20. The third was identified as a Tiv, who was visiting.
