Two Benue farmers sent to prison over alleged armed robbery, abduction

A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, remanded two farmers, Orshi Tyohemba and Johnpaul Agbanger, in a Makurdi correctional center over alleged armed robbery and abduction.

The farmers who live in Konshisha and Kwande local government areas, respectively, are being charged with criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, abduction, and acts of terrorism.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Chief Magistrate, Kelvin Mbanongun, did not take the defendants’ plea due to lack of jurisdiction.

Mbanongun adjourned the matter until Aug 5, for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Godwin Ato, told the court

that Tyohemba and Agbanger conspired with others, now at large, to abduct the complainant’s mother, Mbazan Agwaza.

He said the complainant, Mlumun Sunday, reported the matter at the Police Area Command, Gboko on April 15.

The prosecutor further said that the defendants stole N8 million from their captive before taking her away to an unknown destination.

He said that the defendants were arrested during a police investigation on the matter.

Ato said that the offences contravened Sections 6(b), 1(1)(2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearm Act, 2004, 3(2).

According to him, the offences also contravened Sections 3(2) and 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult, and Similar Activities Prohibition Laws of Benue, 2017.
