Recall that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, initiated the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice at a subsidised rate of N40,000 per 50kg bag in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to him, the initiative was part of President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to ensure that “Nigerians do not go to bed hungry.”

He emphasised that only citizens with a National Identity Number can access the N40,000 bag of rice.

However, residents in Abuja have lamented that they are yet to get the rice.

Benedicta Okoro, a civil servant in Kubwa, said she couldn’t find any location in Abuja where the N40,000 per bag rice was being sold.

“I wonder why Nigerians can’t find where to buy the N40,000 per bag of rice in Abuja. I had to go to the Dutse Market to buy local rice at N84,000 per 50kg bag,” she said.

Another resident, Amina Aliyu, urged the government to be transparent about the N40,000 rice distribution.

“How can you launch N40,000 per bag of rice and nobody has seen or bought it yet? The government should be transparent. The last time it was said to have been launched, but people didn’t see it before it was suspended,” she said.

Meanwhile, an inquiry to the Director of Communications at the Ministry, Joel Oruche, has not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.

This development comes amid the ongoing hardship caused by the recent petrol price hike, which may further worsen the prices of goods and services in Nigeria, with inflation at 33.40% as of July 2024.
