The rule stipulates that officers who have either reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service must retire.
This decision was made during the PSC’s first extraordinary meeting of 2025, chaired by retired Deputy Inspector General Hashimu Argungu.
The meeting, which was attended by notable officials such as retired Supreme Court Justice Adamu Paul Galumje and retired Deputy Inspector General Taiwo Lakanu, was aimed at reviewing personnel management within the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, the commission clarified that it had revisited its previous 2017 decision, which had aligned officers’ appointment dates with enlistment dates.
After a thorough review, the PSC determined that this approach was inconsistent with public service retirement regulations and violated established rules.
As a result, the Commission decided to enforce the mandatory retirement of officers who meet the age or service requirements.
The directive has been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate action. The PSC’s move is part of its ongoing efforts to ensure a dynamic and compliant leadership within the police force.
The Commission emphasized that this decision is in line with its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and fairness in the management of police personnel, ensuring the long-term stability and effectiveness of the force.
