ASUU had suspended its eight-month-long strike in 2022 based on assurances from the government. However, the union claims that issues such as unpaid salaries, poor funding of universities, and the non-implementation of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) alternatives remain unresolved.

Prof. Osodeke accused the government of deliberately ignoring the welfare of university lecturers and failing to honor agreements signed years ago. He warned that ASUU would not hesitate to take decisive action if the government continues to neglect its obligations.

The Federal Government has shown a lack of commitment to improving the education sector. We have been patient, but nothing has changed. If this continues, we will be forced to take appropriate measures,” he said.

The union called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to intervene urgently to prevent another disruption in the university system.

Students and parents have expressed concerns over the possibility of another strike, urging both parties to resolve the crisis amicably. Meanwhile, the Federal Government is yet to respond to ASUU’s latest accusations.
