Following the horrific massacre of around 200 people in Yelwata, Benue State, Pope Leo XIV offered prayers for the victims, calling the violence a “terrible massacre” and a threat to rural Christian communities. Most of the victims were internally displaced persons sheltered by a local Catholic mission.

Amnesty International demanded immediate action from Nigerian authorities to stop the daily bloodshed and hold the perpetrators accountable. Advocacy group Save the Persecuted Christians blamed Muslim Fulani militants for the June 13–14 attacks, alleging the violence was retaliation for Bishop Wilfred Anagbe’s testimonies in the U.S. and U.K. on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
The bishop described systematic attacks on Christian communities by extremists, warning that Benue is witnessing “Islamist extermination.” Despite this, the Catholic Church in Nigeria continues to grow, with record Mass attendance.
