Recently there was a burning issue about graduates pushing wheel barrow or riding Okada to survive after university. Those who were proponents of this position were speaking from an ethical point of view.

Their sermon is simple: instead of resorting to criminality to make ends meet, a graduate should take menial jobs. Morally, ethically and spiritually no one can disagree with this.

Dr Charles Awuzie had an interesting perspective. He minced no words in saying that a graduate who can’t create a job or business after university smirks of laziness and lack of creativity.

He cited examples of students who successfully ran businesses even while in school. Charles’ perspective is seductive and I can’t help falling for it.

Firstly, there’s everything wrong with our educational philosophy, policy and vision that prepares people for employment instead of innovation. Imagine a school system that produces graduates of Business Administration waiting to be employed in businesses built by ‘illiterates’, odiegwu.

There needs to be a radical overhauling of our school system in Nigeria.
If pushing wheel barrow or any menial job remains even your remote option as a graduate, please don’t go to the university. Why waste 4 to 6 years and money to do university only to come out and start pushing wheel barrow or riding Okada to survive?

There are people today with viable businesses who started as Okada riders. The difference is that they started early enough. Don’t be fooled by school.

Most skills needed to survive and thrive today do not need university education, what they need is LEARNING, and I can assure you that such learnings are better off in the ‘street’ than in tertiary schooIs.

I know graduates of computer science employed by an ‘ungraduate’ who is skilled in computer. This scenario is rampant.

Why spend so much resources and time in the University only to come out to start pushing wheel barrow that your mate pushed while you were in university and saved money to start something bigger and better?

There is a sense in which school, especially the tertiary institutions, is just a fad that people follow. It is ‘fashionable’ to be certified. Of course I’m not denying certain job opportunities that only university certificates can get you, but they are in the minority. In a country like Nigeria, they are even fewer.

Not to talk about the delay in marriage that many ladies are experiencing now and attributing to spiritual causes. The present school system is among the few causes of delay in marriage, and we need to devote time to look at that issue sometime.

Just don’t let school fool you.
Learning to read, write and think with clarity is enough education, and I think our educational system should be set up in such a way that students can be proficient in those areas by the time they complete secondary school. Any other thing after that should be skills.

School systems do not produce geniuses. The physics many of you are studying now in schools came from works of people like Isaac Newton, and they didn’t attend these schools to make those discoveries and theories. It is safe to say that most of the things we study in schools today are products of people’s ingenuity, not school attendance.

A study have shown that school systems kill ingenuity. Some kids were discovered as geniuses; they used their natural intelligence to solve problems as kids. After some years, more than 50% had lost their ingenuity.

More years later, only about 2% of them were still geniuses. What happened to the rest? School happened to them; they lost their ingenuity because of school. So, don’t let school fool you.…..For More READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE ▶▶
