Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has reacted to Nigeria’s latest ranking on the 2025 Global Firepower Military Strength Index, which places the country as the third most powerful military force in Africa. The annual report, which assessed the military capabilities of 145 countries worldwide, considered a range of factors including manpower, equipment, logistics, and financial resources.
In a post shared on social media, Senator Sani acknowledged the ranking as a positive reflection of Nigeria’s military capacity on paper but cautioned against equating global rankings with operational effectiveness on the ground. He emphasized the need for improved accountability, better welfare for troops, and enhanced coordination in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats within the country.

“The ranking is encouraging, but true military strength lies in performance, discipline, and the ability to safeguard the lives and property of citizens,” Sani stated. “We must not be content with global recognition — the focus must be on results.”
The 2025 Global Firepower Index ranks Egypt and Algeria as first and second respectively in Africa, with Nigeria maintaining a strong regional position despite ongoing internal security challenges.
