Erekwa was charged in court by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) of the Rivers State Police Command.

The cleric pleaded guilty to the charge—read out to him by presiding Chief Magistrate Ogeh Elkanah—that he sexually abused a 15-year-old girl at Mgbuola village in Rundele community, Emohua Local Government Area of the state.

According to the court, the offence committed between December 2022 and January 2023 is punishable under the Rivers State Child Act.

Chief Magistrate Elkanah, who is attached to the Rivers State family court, after listening to the charge and plea of the defendant, directed that he should be remanded in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre before adjourning until July 19, 2023, for facts and sentencing.

DAILY POST reports that Pastor Erekwa was arrested last week by detectives attached to the Rumuji Police Division in Emohua LGA and later transferred to SCIID for further investigation.

In the meantime, the national coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, who has been on the matter, commended the Police for arraigning the suspect in court.

Wiro equally commended the family of the victim for not bowing to alleged pressure to settle the case out of court.
