According to a report by The Times of Israel on Thursday, 3 July 2025, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed via a post on X that all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will now be routed through Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Araghchi insisted that this change was necessary “for obvious safety and security reasons,” and reaffirmed Iran’s continued commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its safeguards agreement.

Although Iran’s foreign ministry sought to frame the decision as a procedural matter, analysts suggest it may complicate the IAEA’s access and oversight processes. The Supreme National Security Council, headed by top military and intelligence officials, plays a pivotal role in shaping Iran’s strategic policies, particularly on defence and nuclear issues.
