During the Splash FM interview, Akande explained his motivation for calling meetings of Yoruba political leaders. “I wanted everybody—anybody who wishes to be free to contest the election—but I don’t want bitterness among the Yoruba contestants. I want them to talk on issues and not for one to destroy the other, because I want one of them to emerge in the end. I want a Yoruba president”.

Despite his efforts to maintain unity, Akande revealed that some aspirants only decided to step down at the last minute. “On the evening of the primary, some came to meet me saying, ‘I’m going to step down today, sir.’ They came to meet you?
