This decision aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which granted financial independence to local governments.

Governor Yusuf, as conveyed by his spokesperson Sanusi Bature in Kano, announced during a meeting at the Government House with the leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Friday, that Kano will hold local government elections and affirmed acceptance of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“Preparations are in top gear by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) for the conduct of council polls, and I can assure you this will happen very soon,” he said.

The statement said the governor stressed his unwavering respect for the rule of law and his commitment to financial prudence, accountability, and transparency in governance at all levels

“Governor Yusuf assured free, fair, and credible local government elections, urging opposition parties to try their luck as his government will not interfere with the electoral process,” the statement said

The statement continues, emphasizing that despite internal pressure, the administration has respected the rule of law by allowing the previous executive councils in all 44 local government areas to complete their tenures.

“So, our respect for accountability and consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment triggered our readiness to conduct council elections.

“We will soon invite you again for the selection of our party’s candidates to be fielded in the 44 LGAs, who will run for the offices of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councillors. We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for the NNPP,” Gov. Yusuf assured.
