Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has vowed to challenge in court what he described as an illegal takeover of the party’s leadership by a coalition of political defectors.
He claims the move is a calculated effort to provide former Vice President Atiku Abubakar with a platform to contest the 2027 presidential election as reported by the nation on Friday, 4 July, 2025.

Kachikwu made this known during a press conference in Abuja, alongside seven ADC state chairmen and the party’s former national spokesman. He criticized the announcement of Senator David Mark as the party’s Interim National Chairman, with former ministers Rauf Aregbesola and Bolaji Abdullahi also named secretary and publicity secretary respectively. He dismissed the transition as a “hijack,” not a legitimate merger.
Kachikwu insisted that the coalition was designed to sideline the South from the party’s 2027 presidential ticket. “If they can boldly declare that the next candidate will come from the South, I’d welcome them. But this is clearly a plot to pave the way for Atiku,” he stated.
He noted that during earlier talks, the coalition leaders rejected the idea of zoning the ticket to the South, asserting instead that “we are taking our power back.”

He argued that such sentiments reflect a return to ethnic-based politics and recycled leadership, which he opposes. “I came fifth in the last election. Now, I’m being told to step aside because I’m from the South. That’s unacceptable,” Kachikwu declared.
Kachikwu also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of enabling confusion within the party by tolerating parallel leadership structures. He said INEC must now clarify who currently holds the position of ADC national chairman. If a vacuum is confirmed, the legitimate state-elected chairmen, whose mandates run until 2026, will organize a national convention to elect new officers.
