While addressing journalists at a press conference held in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the coalition’s spokesperson, Chidi Amadi, accused the former governor of engaging in corrupt activities that, according to him, significantly contributed to the state’s ongoing economic difficulties.

“We are demanding that the EFCC open an immediate investigation into the tenure of Rotimi Amaechi as the Governor of Rivers State. There are numerous allegations of financial mismanagement and diversion of public funds that have not been addressed. He must not go free without facing the law,” Amadi firmly stated.

The coalition alleges that numerous contracts awarded under Amaechi’s administration were either excessively inflated or left incomplete, despite the fact that funds had already been disbursed for them. According to the group, these financial irregularities led to substantial economic losses for the state, and those responsible should be held accountable for their actions.

Tonye Briggs, another prominent member of the coalition, underscored the necessity of ensuring that justice is served. Emphasizing the importance of accountability, he declared:

“If you have cases of corruption, be ready to face justice. The resources of this state were plundered, and the perpetrators continue to walk free. We call on the EFCC to act swiftly and ensure that Amaechi is investigated and, if found guilty, prosecuted accordingly.”

As of now, the EFCC has yet to issue an official response to the demands put forward by the coalition. However, legal analysts suggest that an inquiry could be initiated if substantial and credible evidence is presented against the former governor.

Amaechi, who held office as the Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 before later serving as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, has previously faced various corruption allegations. Despite these accusations, no formal charges have ever been filed against him.

On the other hand, his supporters continue to defend his legacy, arguing that he was a transformational leader who made significant contributions to the development of Rivers State. They contend that the renewed push for an investigation is politically motivated rather than being rooted in genuine concerns over governance and accountability.

Political observers believe that this controversy has the potential to further escalate tensions within Rivers State’s already heated political landscape, especially with the nation moving closer to the next round of elections.

As events continue to unfold, all eyes remain on the EFCC to determine whether the agency will heed the coalition’s demands and launch a formal investigation into Amaechi’s administration.
