The incident reportedly occurred on August 19, 2023, in the Bantu village of Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi.

The command’s spokesman, SP Mohammed Wakil, said in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday that the incident was reported at the Ningi Divisional Police Headquarters the day it happened.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, married to the same husband as the mother of the newborn, secretly gained access to her room and allegedly rubbed a liquid insecticide commonly known as Gammalin on the baby’s unhealed umbilical cord.

“The liquid, suspected to be corrosive, led to the deterioration of the baby’s health and eventually to his death. The investigation is ongoing, after which the suspect will be profiled and charged in court accordingly,” the statement partly reads.
