Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to a detailed feature by Punch Newspaper, a number of women who lost their partners in military service have decried the indifference shown by the armed forces.
Several of them stated they are yet to receive any compensation, including life insurance or death gratuities, long after the loss of their loved ones. Some shared stories of being plunged into hardship, left to deal with red tape without institutional support.
Hamajoda’s ordeal is particularly distressing. She recounted how a visit to the army’s central office in Abuja took a disturbing turn when a senior officer solicited inappropriate favors.
Rather than offering the help she sought, the officer allegedly demanded either money or sexual compliance to move her husband’s file forward.
She explained that she was already overwhelmed—juggling the responsibilities of caring for an infant while facing financial strain—only to be subjected to demeaning propositions by someone entrusted with aiding grieving families.
Unable to endure the situation, she eventually stepped back and had her in-laws intervene to complete the required paperwork.
Her story underscores a severe breach of duty and highlights a culture of exploitation within systems intended to assist bereaved military families. “He spoke to me in Pidgin,” she recalled. “He said, ‘madam you go shake body.’ I asked what he meant, and he told me I wasn’t a child—I should understand.”
Hear her speak: I don’t want to talk about it, and I will never wish my son or any young man to join the Nigerian Army. The thought of my experience made me sick.”
