Residents said the incident occurred on Friday while a welder was working on a metal with carbide.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the police in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, said those injured have been taken to a medical facility for treatment while the deceased’s body has been deposited in a morgue.
Ikenga also explained that operatives of the Force have been deployed to the scene of the incident to secure the place and prevent criminals from taking advantage of the explosion to loot from traders.
In addition, Ikenga said a preliminary investigation shows that the explosion from the gas cylinder occurred due to exposure to excess heat.
“To this end, the Police Operatives have taken steps to secure the area and prevent criminal-minded persons from taking advantage of the situation to commit crimes,” Ikenga noted.
