Cadet’s death: Father denies drowning theory, insists his son was poisoned

The father of deceased Air Force cadet Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyemereneche, Ephraim Onyeomereneche, has made alarming allegations regarding his son’s death, which the police initially attributed to drowning in a swimming pool at Hotel Royal Damgrate in Abia State on April 9, 2024. Onyeomereneche contends that his son was murdered through poisoning, implicating Cadet Officer Valentine Ucheji Obeji and his brother, police officer Eric Obeji, in the alleged crime....CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING.>>

According to Onyeomereneche, an autopsy conducted on June 29 suggested that Chidiebere did not drown, contradicting the police’s account. He believes Obeji orchestrated the murder to eliminate competition, as only one cadet from each geopolitical zone would be selected for Air Force pilot training. Onyeomereneche expressed frustration over Obeji’s lack of communication with his family since the incident, describing it as suspicious.

Onyeomereneche detailed the events leading up to his son’s disappearance, noting that Valentine had invited Chidiebere to the hotel for swimming. After declaring he would not swim due to the pool’s condition, Chidiebere left his belongings—phones, clothes, and ATM cards—on the poolside but later vanished. Onyeomereneche questioned why Obeji did not conduct a thorough search for his son, suggesting foul play.

The grieving father also highlighted inconsistencies in the investigation, alleging that the Abia State Police were attempting to cover up the circumstances surrounding his son’s death. He pointed out that Chidiebere’s body showed no signs typically associated with drowning and raised concerns over the police’s handling of his son’s possessions and the absence of a pool attendant at the time of the incident.

In response to the allegations, Abia State Police spokesperson ASP Maureen Chinaka denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the claims were untrue and emphasizing that the police were investigating the incident appropriately. Eric Obeji, while denying any involvement in Chidiebere’s death, acknowledged that the pool was in poor condition and called for further examination of the site.

Valentine Obeji, when approached for comments, stated that he was not authorized to speak to the media regarding the matter. The family of the deceased continues to seek justice, with Onyeomereneche urging authorities to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding his son’s death and to clarify the allegations of foul play.
