Rev Fr Joseph Azubuike, parish priest of St Charles in Mgbaleke Isu, Onicha LGA, Ebonyi State, was reportedly kidnapped yesterday by unknown gunmen.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The abduction of Fr. Azubuike was announced by Rev Fr Matthew Uzoma Opoke, Diocesan Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, in a statement signed and made available to newsmen in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, on Tuesday.
The statement reads in part: “Pray for the unconditional release of Very Rev. Fr.
Joseph Azubuike, who was abducted on Monday, 10th July 2023, close to his parish on his way back from pastoral duties.
“He was abducted alongside three other people. The abductors are making financial demands, but with your prayer, we are going to have them back unconditionally.”
Similarly, there was an alleged heavy shooting in Okposi and Uburu communities on Monday by unknown gunmen, which resulted in an exchange of fire with the security agents in the areas.
When contacted for confirmation at the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, was not forthcoming.
The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Internal Security, Chief Etta Uka, when contacted, directed DAILY POST to call the council chairmen of Onicha and Ohaozara LGAs for details as he has nothing to say concerning the kidnapping of the Catholic Priest and the alleged shooting at the said two communities.
