The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing internal turmoil following the appointment of former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman. Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has vehemently rejected this development, accusing allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of orchestrating a clandestine takeover of the party’s leadership.

In a strongly worded statement, Kachikwu described the appointment as a “political dramedy” and criticized the alliance between Atiku’s faction and the party’s former leadership under Ralph Nwosu, whose tenure he claims expired in August 2022. He questioned the legitimacy of the move, stating, “Can you build something on nothing? Can you shave a man’s hair in his absence? Can you enter a man’s house through the back door and declare yourself the landlord?”

Kachikwu further accused the group of attempting to hijack the party structure without due process, labeling them as “a bunch of greedy and selfish old men who believe that political power is their birthright.” He emphasized that Nigerians are weary of such political maneuvers and reject the continuation of what he termed a “chopping must continue” culture.

The opposition coalition, which includes prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar, Rauf Aregbesola, and Bolaji Abdullahi, has adopted the ADC as its platform for the 2027 elections. The coalition appointed David Mark as interim chairman and Aregbesola as interim secretary, aiming to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) .

However, Kachikwu and several state chairmen have disowned the new leadership, asserting that the coalition’s actions are illegitimate and undermine the party’s constitution.
