Dr. Joseph Wayas, former Senate President, returned to Nigeria 33 months after his passing

According to Vanguard, The remains of Dr. Joseph Wayas, Nigeria’s Senate President from 1979 to 1983, have finally arrived in Nigeria for burial, two years and nine months after his passing in a London hospital on November 30, 2021, at the age of 80.

The late senator’s body was received at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by his family, friends, and prominent individuals from Cross River North senatorial district, including Senator Jarigbe Agom and Peter Akpanke.

The body was subsequently deposited at the National Hospital’s morgue in Abuja. Senator Agom and Peter Akpanke expressed their relief and happiness that the body had been brought back home, while the late wife’s family appreciated the efforts of those who facilitated the return of his remains.

The delayed return of Wayas’ body had sparked controversies, with some believing it had been secretly buried in London.

The burial committee, headed by former Minister of Justice Kanu Agabi, was set up by the Cross River State government to oversee the funeral arrangements.
