Punch claims that sowore, who had just arrived from the US, was taken into custody by Nigerian immigration officers, who took his passport under duress.

He said that he had anticipated the current regime’s efforts to stifle dissent, so his detention was not shocking.
He made reference to the impending “Fearless in October” uprising scheduled for October 1 and implied that the arrest was a part of a larger crackdown on opposition movements.
His plane had taken off from Dulles International Airport and arrived in Lagos at approximately 9:43 in the morning.
According to an earlier leaked memo from the Department of State Services (DSS), he was ordered to be arrested as soon as he arrived.
But after a short period of custody, Sowore was freed and his passport was given back.
