Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as gunmen opened fire on the officers stationed at the checkpoint.

One witness, who requested anonymity due to fear of retribution, reported, “The attackers shot four policemen who were on duty. A female Point of Sale operator and several pedestrians were also caught in the crossfire. It was a terrifying experience, and people nearby fled in fear.”

The eyewitness also noted that the area has been plagued by similar violent incidents, underscoring a pattern of attacks targeting both law enforcement and civilians.

“This road has become a danger zone. There have been previous attacks where both policemen and civilians lost their lives. We urgently need increased security measures here.”

Another resident speculated that the assailants could be enforcing the controversial Monday sit-at-home order, which has been sporadically observed in parts of the South-East.

“It’s alarming to see this level of violence. Many thought the Monday sit-at-home directive was no longer in effect in Imo State, but incidents like this instill fear in people, making them reluctant to go out.”

The attack has sparked renewed concerns over public safety and the effectiveness of security measures in the region, with calls for immediate government action to address the rising insecurity.
