Francis Ngannou would have been the ideal adversary for Jones at UFC 285 but did not fight due to a contractual stalemate between him and UFC.

UFC president, Dana White, repeated that Jones would next face Stipe Miocic and made it clear that the organization would not try to sign Ngannou any longer since he had turned down an offer that would have made him the highest-paid heavyweight fighter in the organisation.

Ngannou wanted an increased salary and more flexibility to pursue other MMA and boxing opportunities, as well as health insurance for all fighters.

Ngannou was content with his decision and said that he was open to other options, such as boxing Tyson Fury or exploring MMA fights in other organizations.
