Oshiomhole pointed out that illegal mining occurs nationwide, including in regions like the South-South, yet little is done to address it compared to the aggressive stance on oil-related crimes. He questioned the inconsistency in government policy, stating that if the military is deployed to curb oil bunkering, similar actions should be taken to tackle illegal mining. He further expressed concerns over the involvement of influential individuals in illegal mining operations, claiming that retired generals and other powerful figures are facilitating these activities.

In Nigeria, hardly any part of Nigeria doesn’t have solid minerals, even in the South South,” Oshiomhole stated. “But when it comes to illegal mining of solid minerals, the federal government changes its approach.” He went on to lament, “If we have to fight and deploy the Army to kill anyone involved in illegal bunkering of oil, why are we allowing illegal mining in many parts of the country to go on?”
