Former lawmaker representing the Ekiti Central Senatorial District, Babafemi Ojudu, has outrightly dismissed the claim made by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu supported former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, during the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Ojudu, a veteran journalist and pro-democracy activist, firmly stated that Bola Tinubu was one of the prominent figures who stood against the military junta following the annulment of the election, which was widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history and was won by Chief M.K.O. Abiola. He recalled that, far from supporting Babangida, Tinubu risked his life by joining the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a group that fiercely opposed military rule and demanded the restoration of Abiola’s mandate.
“When the military clamped down on the pro-democracy movement, Tinubu went into exile. He was one of those financing the struggle abroad, organizing international pressure against the regime. How then can anyone claim he supported the annulment?” Ojudu queried.

He went on to accuse Lamido of either being misinformed or deliberately attempting to tarnish Tinubu’s democratic credentials for political reasons. Ojudu urged Nigerians, especially the younger generation, to revisit documented history and not rely on revisionist narratives that distort the sacrifices made by the true heroes of democracy.
