This announcement follows the identification of 3,690 Nigerians among 1.4 million individuals categorised as “illegal migrants” with deportation orders issued by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to a document from ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), these Nigerians have been on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders since 24 November 2024.
The non-detained docket includes individuals who have been ordered to leave the U.S. or are undergoing the deportation process but are not currently in ICE custody. A report by Fox News revealed that over seven million people are on this list, which also accounts for those detained in federal, state, or local jails, although not directly in ICE custody.
In response to this development, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at NiDCOM, stated in an interview with Vanguard that the Federal Government has already formed a committee to manage the process if required.
“The Federal Government has established an inter-agency committee comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, in the event of mass deportation of Nigerians from the U.S.”
However, Balogun clarified that NiDCOM had no knowledge of any Nigerians currently facing deportation.
Among African nations, Nigeria ranks second for the number of citizens slated for deportation, following Somalia, which has 4,090. Ghana is close behind with 3,166.
Globally, the highest numbers of individuals with deportation orders originate from Mexico (252,044), Guatemala (253,413), Honduras (261,651), and El Salvador (203,822). Other countries on the list include China (37,908), Haiti (32,363), Iran (2,618), Pakistan (776), Uzbekistan (975), and Venezuela (22,749).
