Lukarawas Came to Promote and markets Islamic Ideologies That Weren’t Practiced in That Locality- Sani Shinkafi

According to Shinkafi, the Lukarawas presented themselves as protectors who would rid the area of bandits and cattle rustlers. They went to known hideouts, targeted bandits, and drove them out, creating an impression that they were there to keep people safe. Because the government hadn’t fully secured these rural areas, many people in the communities saw the Lukarawas as helpful.

However, Shinkafi explained that the Lukarawas soon began promoting strict Islamic ideologies that were unfamiliar to the locals. For example, they banned the sale of cigars, closing and burning down shops that sold them. The Lukarawas also took over local religious practices, including presiding over Friday prayers. In their view, only those who could speak Arabic fluently could lead these prayers, and give sermons, so they replaced local Imams with their own.
