According to reports, the confrontation between the couple escalated quickly after Mrs. Nwaka returned home from an outing. Witnesses claim that Obiozor, enraged by suspicions regarding his wife’s fidelity, confronted her. An anonymous source recounted, “The man’s wife had returned home after the day’s outing with her supposedly ‘secret lover’ when the angry husband confronted her.” The altercation intensified, leading to a horrific outcome when Obiozor poured petrol on Mrs. Nwaka and ignited the flames.
Heart-wrenching footage of the incident has since circulated on social media, showing the victim desperately fleeing for safety while suffering from severe third-degree burns over a significant portion of her body. Tragically, despite efforts from passers-by and neighbors to extinguish the flames, Mrs. Nwaka was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries early Wednesday morning.
Obiozor Nwaka reportedly presented himself at the Abagana Divisional Police Station following the incident, where he claimed that his wife had been unfaithful, leading to the violent confrontation. The police confirmed his detention and are currently investigating the matter. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated, “The suspect is in police custody. But the unfortunate thing is that the victim died this morning. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the Homicide Unit for a comprehensive investigation.”
The tragic nature of this incident has drawn widespread outrage. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State governor, expressed her deep concern regarding the incident, describing it as “gruesome and evil.” She vowed to ensure that justice is served. “This administration takes issues of domestic violence and gender abuse as serious crimes. No one found guilty of such offenses will walk free,” she asserted.
Following the grim news, the governor’s wife ordered an immediate investigation and has been in close contact with officials from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and the health sector to ascertain the facts surrounding the case.
