NLC Pushes for ₦1 Million Monthly Wage Amid Economic Hardship

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has entered into formal negotiations with the Federal Government, demanding an unprecedented ₦1 million monthly minimum wage for Nigerian workers. The union cites worsening inflation, sharp depreciation of the naira, and skyrocketing costs of living as justification for its bold proposal.

The proposed wage would significantly overhaul the existing ₦70,000 benchmark set in 2024 under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Labour leaders argue that the current wage, worth less than $45 per month at prevailing exchange rates, no longer reflects the economic reality faced by millions of Nigerians.

According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, the union is determined to restore the real value of workers’ incomes. “We are not asking for luxury—₦1 million is what it takes today for an average Nigerian family to survive with dignity,” he said.
