According to a statement issued by the NLC, the decision comes in response to the tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, 2025. The NLC has vowed to mobilize its members for a mass demonstration aimed at pressuring the government and telecom companies to reverse the decision.
During the ongoing National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting, union leaders agreed that a national shutdown would send a strong message to authorities.
They believe that the hike will worsen the financial struggles of Nigerians, deepen poverty, and negatively impact workers already grappling with rising inflation and economic instability.
Beyond the NLC, other organizations, such as the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATS), have also condemned the tariff adjustment, with some considering legal action against the government and telecom operators.
Meanwhile, government officials have defended the decision, citing inflationary pressures as a key factor behind the approval of the price increase. As of December 2024, Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at 34.80%, which the government claims necessitated the adjustment in telecom tariffs.
