According to The Punch, the sources indicated that Atiku had pledged to serve only one term of four years, and that Obi had agreed, in principle, to be his running mate. However, the former Anambra State governor was reportedly working behind the scenes to gain the support of his core political allies before making any public commitments.

It will be recalled that Obi previously ran as Atiku’s running mate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2019 presidential election, which they lost to former President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

On March 20, Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others announced a coalition in Abuja, aimed at forming a formidable opposition bloc to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. The development has since ignited national debate over the feasibility and strength of such an alliance, with stakeholders offering differing perspectives.

An ally privy to the development while speaking on the condition of anonymity said that despite the buzz surrounding the announcement, both the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party continue to grapple with internal divisions, and Nigerians are still awaiting formal confirmation from the principal actors.

When he was questioned about the political platform Atiku and Peter Obi intend to use, given the crises in both the PDP and LP, the source revealed that they were considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He said, “The crisis in Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party is frustrating. While they’re both making efforts, and waiting to see if the crisis can be resolved in favour of their camps, they’re both looking at possible political parties to run on.”

Further talking, the source said, “The Social Democratic Party was part of the plans before now, but it seems the ruling All Progressives Congress, has also infiltrated the party. So, they are tilting towards the ADC. As a matter of fact, some of the loyalists have been meeting with the ADC leadership, and others have quietly joined the party. So, if things don’t favour them in LP, and PDP, they may join ADC.
