Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has expressed concerns over what he believes to be an attempt by the Nigeria Police Force to detain him in response to his criticism of the extension of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure. Sowore stated that the police relied on information sourced primarily from the internet to support their claims against him. He noted that the officers were unable to provide a clear account of the alleged offense, offering only vague details about the location of the incident in Lagos.
During the session, Sowore refused to submit a written statement, arguing that without a defined crime, such a step was unnecessary. After a brief recess, police officers informed him that they were awaiting further instructions from their superiors. He interpreted this as an indication of plans to detain him and possibly transfer him to Lagos for what he described as an unfair trial.
“I chose not to provide a written statement, as we informed the Police team that, in the absence of a defined crime, the process to determine such was unnecessary. They took a break and later informed me that they were awaiting instructions from their superiors. It seems their plan is to detain me and take me to Lagos for a kangaroo trial,” he stated.
Sowore attributed the police action to his public statements opposing the extension of the Inspector-General’s tenure, which he considers unlawful. Despite the situation, he remains resolute and has vowed to continue his advocacy for justice and accountability.
His encounter with law enforcement follows his release of a viral video exposing alleged police extortion at a checkpoint in Lagos, which he believes contributed to the renewed scrutiny from authorities.
