Tusk revealed that the extensive investigation has led to charges being filed against 62 members of the former “ruling elite.”

Tusk, who leads a centrist coalition that came to power in December after winning last year’s national election, emphasized the importance of holding former officials accountable. His government, which succeeded the national conservative Law and Justice party, has promised to restore democratic standards in Poland.

During its eight-year rule, Law and Justice faced accusations from the European Union of undermining democratic principles. Polish media reported various instances of nepotism and corruption, such as state funds being funneled to party loyalists and affiliated foundations.

At a news conference in Warsaw, Tusk was joined by the heads of the interior, justice, and finance ministries, who signed an agreement to collaborate on efforts to recover the misappropriated state funds. Tusk highlighted that this was the first time in Poland’s history that former government officials have been held accountable so swiftly and effectively.
