Among those who lost their lives during the demonstration were two teenagers, Umar Abubakar Hausawa and Kashifu Abdullahi.

According to Rabiu Abubakar, who was Hausawa’s brother, the latter met an untimely end while trying to persuade his younger brothers to abandon the protest.

He said, “When we were informed about what happened, we rushed to the scene and found my brother lying in the pool of his blood. We took him to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, but there was no bed to admit him. We decided to take him to a private hospital, where he underwent an emergency surgery. But later in the morning, he gave up the ghost.”

He explained that the surgery would have cost N400,000 at the hospital, but they managed to raise N250,000 on the spot. The surgeons promised to pay the remaining N200,000 when they finished the procedure.

Firdausi Muhammad, a bride-to-be, was another victim; she was running errands in her neighborhood when she was shot.

Rumor has it that Firdausi’s wedding is scheduled for next week.

The community is still reeling from the tragedy of her death, which has shocked the people of Riyar Lemo.

Merchants and companies are also bemoaning their losses. One of them, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammad, had his shop looted along Zoo Road. He revealed that he had restocked his shop the night before the protest, but looters destroyed and stole everything.

Many are demanding that the government step in to help the impacted traders and businesses, and the protest has raised many more questions than it has answered.
