Reasons behind the acceptance of N70,000 minimum wage, according to NLC

According to a report by Punch on Thursday, July 18, 2024, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, explained the rationale behind accepting President Bola Tinubu’s proposal of a N70,000 minimum wage during a meeting with State House reporters on Thursday.

Ajaero cited several reasons for the labour unions’ acceptance of the offer, emphasizing the additional incentives attached to the wage increase. He also highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to review the minimum wage every three years, a departure from previous practices.

President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the N70,000 minimum wage was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Onanuga stated that Tinubu announced the new wage during a meeting with leaders of the Organized Labour in Abuja, marking the second such meeting within a week.

The new minimum wage, once approved by the National Assembly, will replace the expiring N30,000 minimum wage effective April 18, 2024.

“Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years. President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.
President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days. The Labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for the fatherly gesture as the President also promised to use his discretionary powers meet the demands of university unions demanding unpaid 4 months salaries.”
