Last Sunday, Hadebe and his friends decided to enjoy an evening in Johannesburg. Their night led them to the popular KwaMai Mai Market in the city’s downtown area, a place known for its vibrant atmosphere.

According to reports, the man and his friends generously bought drinks for Hadebe and his companions, engaging them in what seemed to be a friendly night out.
However, the evening took a darker turn when the man showed a particular interest in Hadebe. A friend of Hadebe, who spoke to ZiMoja, recounted how they advised him to disclose his gender to the man. Despite the warning, Hadebe chose not to reveal his identity and ultimately accepted the man’s invitation to go home with him.
The decision proved fatal. In the early hours of Monday morning, Hadebe was found dead at a Johannesburg bed and breakfast.
He had been shot nine times, in what is suspected to be a targeted and hate-fueled attack.
This tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the dangers faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in situations where their identities are concealed or misunderstood.
It also highlights the broader issue of violence and discrimination that continues to plague many communities across South Africa.
As investigations continue, the police are working to piece together the events that led to Hadebe’s untimely death.
The suspect, whose identity remains unknown, is currently at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing justice to Hadebe and his grieving family.
