Rivers: Police arraign 122 youths for breach of public peace, others

The Rivers State Police Command has arraigned 122 youths before a Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

The youths were accused of attempting to invade the residence of the embattled Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, on Tuesday.

In the charges read out in court on Wednesday, the youths including the state Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Chijioke Ihunwo, were accused of conspiracy, causing riot, destroying the entrance gate to the residence of the Speaker of the state Assembly, unlawful assembly and causing breach in public peace.

DAILY POST reports that the accused pleaded not guilty to the five count charge.

Presiding Chief Magistrate, Gift Amadi granted the accused bail in the sum of N100 million each and 20 sureties to represent all the accused.

The Chief Magistrate, before adjourning till 5th of December, 2023 for trial, ordered that the accused be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Center pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions
