Initial speculation suggested that Mrs. Ekweremadu was exonerated after a legal review; however, credible sources have debunked these claims, clarifying that she was released after completing her six-year prison term. Reports confirm that she served her full sentence following her conviction in the controversial organ harvesting case that also implicated her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and Dr. Obinna Obeta.
Senator Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were convicted by a UK court for attempting to traffic a young Nigerian man to the UK for organ harvesting purposes. The court found them guilty under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015, in what was described as a “horrific plot” that displayed “utter disregard for the victim’s welfare, health, and wellbeing.”
The ruling was a landmark case, as it was the first conviction under the Modern Slavery Act related to organ trafficking. Senator Ekweremadu was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Mrs. Ekweremadu received a six-year term. Dr. Obinna Obeta, who was accused of facilitating the arrangement, also received a prison sentence.
Throughout the legal process, several prominent figures and institutions, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), appealed for leniency, citing humanitarian concerns and the senator’s contributions to public service. However, their pleas were unsuccessful in altering the court’s decision.
Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return has rekindled hope among their supporters that similar efforts may eventually lead to her husband’s early release.…..For More READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE ▶▶
