The change coincides with President Donald Trump’s tariff war. CNN’s Harry Enten noted that for years, Democrats have enjoyed a substantial advantage in this area.

Enten said, “We got a tie even after this tariff war had already started.”

The Republican Party gains support among working-class voters. While college-educated voters maintain an 18-point preference for Democrats, non-college-educated voters shifted from a 7-point Democratic advantage to a 9-point Republican lead.

The 16-point swing suggests Democrats are struggling to connect with blue-collar voters amid policies that may negatively affect them. Enten said, “This to me is one of the most shocking pieces of poll data that I truly, truthfully have seen this year, maybe in any prior year.”

Polling data shows Democrats cannot assume regaining control of the House will be easy as the 2026 midterm elections approach. Enten warned that Republicans are positioned well to capitalize on rising support among working-class voters.

Enten said, “The working class, that is where Republicans have gained, even since the beginning of the Donald Trump administration.”

Despite efforts by Democrats to portray the GOP as disconnected from average Americans, the data suggests this narrative may be faltering. Enten stated, “If Democrats think they automatically have a ticket back to control of the House, I’d say hold on a second.”

Enten added, “Republicans still have a real shot at this, despite all of Trump’s theatrics over the last month with this tariff war.”

Political pollster Matt Towery addressed the current approval ratings for Trump, noting that data has not signaled broad disapproval. A Quinnipiac poll reported a 12-point decline, but such polling methods have historically misjudged Trump’s backing.
