It is now a back-to-back defeat for Ronald Koeman’s team after they were beaten 4-2 by Croatia in the semifinals.
Van Dijk, who was visibly frustrated after the Italy defeat, said, “It’s just not good enough. The first half was bad. This can’t happen. You play for your honour today. I feel ashamed.”
Former Tottenham star, Rafael van der Vaart, had already slammed Van Dijk over his role in Chiesa’s goal for Italy.
“Virgil van Dijk is being criticised and rightly so. For 20 minutes, I thought: he is back, but that moment with Chiesa.. he is basically doing nothing.”
