Lamido made the statement during an interview with Arise News, a clip of which was posted on the station’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

In the interview, Lamido challenged the widely held narrative that President Tinubu played a central role in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria, particularly during the military era.

He alleged that unlike other activists who remained in the country and risked their lives opposing Abacha’s rule, Tinubu fled Nigeria and only returned after the danger had passed.

“He ran away. We stayed behind; we fought Abacha. I was detained. All of us, Bola Ige, Iyorchia Ayu…, we fought Abacha because we were ready to risk our lives.
