It was revealed that while the officers were on a mission to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals (Yahoo boys), they encountered fierce resistance.

Reports indicate that the suspect, Joshua Ikechukwu, shot one officer dead while another sustained serious injury and was rushed to the hospital.

This raised concerns as many questioned why the officials decided to conduct the raid at night instead of during the daytime.

Recall that on November 1, 2023, the EFCC directed that sting operations at night be halted in all commands and assured Nigerians that it would adhere to the rule of law in carrying out its mandate.’

The statement read, “In line with the newly-revised procedures on the arrest and bail of suspects by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has directed that sting operations at night be stopped in all EFCC commands.

He gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in response to the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters by operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Commission in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Already, many of the suspects duly profiled by the Command have been released, while the profiling of suspects yet to be released will be completed without further delay.

The Commission wishes to assure the public that it will not relent in adhering to the rule of law, in the exercise of its mandate.”

However, in 2025, there have been complaints from Nigerians regarding the night raid by the EFCC despite this directive.
