According to Okonkwo, the current situation sets a dangerous precedent for the handling of traditional leadership roles in Nigeria.

So for me, if Governor Yusuf has anything against Ado Bayero, he should bring it out openly, give him fair hearing. If he’s found wanting, then you depose him in accordance with the law, then install a new Emir. Anything short of that is an injustice and a dangerous precedent to the traditional institution.
Okonkwo stressed that the handling of the matter must follow due process, ensuring that political considerations do not influence decisions regarding the traditional leadership. “It could be an Oba tomorrow, it could be an Emir tomorrow, whoever has not offended the law must not be punished by political consideration.
He further highlighted the importance of the rule of law, stating, “One of the things about the rule of law is that you can punish somebody within the law, but you cannot punish somebody outside the law.
