The former chairmen claim the funds, amounting to N183,196,629,321.19, were received by the state government between November 2022 and November 2024.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Saturday, the head of the forum, Abiodun Owoeye, alleged that the Adeleke administration violated the 1999 Constitution by withholding and directly spending federal allocations meant for the local councils.
Owoeye argued that this action disregards the autonomy of local governments and contravenes the principles of federalism enshrined in the constitution.
Owoeye stated, “The actions by the Adeleke administration are against the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the funding of local governments.
We are deeply concerned by the flagrant abuse and disregard for the judicial pronouncement of the highest court in the land. This administration has tampered with funds released from the Federation Account to the tune of N183 billion credited to the local councils.”
He further called on Governor Adeleke to account for the funds and respect constitutional provisions on local government autonomy.
The former chairmen also emphasized the importance of adherence to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which upholds the financial independence of local councils.
They expressed dismay over the alleged misappropriation, which they believe has hindered development and grassroots governance in Osun State.
In response, they urged the federal government, anti-corruption agencies, and civil society organizations to investigate the matter and ensure accountability. The forum warned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent for governance at the grassroots level if left unchecked.
They reiterated their commitment to defending local government autonomy and promoting transparency in public administration.
