Traders operating nearby hastily shut their shops and fled as tensions rose.
The spokesperson for the NSCDC in Taraba, Mr. Illia Samuel, confirmed the incident, revealing that the tanker driver, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He emphasized the urgency of the situation:
“Immediately we got information about the accident, the command drafted our men to the scene to avert any occurrences that could lead to casualties. We are going to ensure that the area is safe, both for residents and travelers.”
This reckless act comes on the heels of the catastrophic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State’s Gurara LGA, where 98 people lost their lives, and many others sustained severe burns.
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) expressed deep concern over the staggering casualty numbers, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to intensify awareness campaigns against fuel scooping during accidents.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) disclosed that 86 bodies from the explosion were buried in a mass grave, and many victims with first-degree burns are still battling for survival in hospitals. Authorities have pointed fingers at residents, stating that the fire was ignited by those recklessly scooping fuel.
